Why is this Sufficient Assumption, and not Inference?

by mtd4mx Fri Nov 17, 2017 1:24 am

Why is the following classified as a Sufficient Assumption question and not an Inference question?

"The conclusion of the argument is properly drawn if which one of the following completes the passage?"

Thanks for your help.

SUFFICIENT ASSUMPTION = which answer, if assumed, proves the conclusion.

To assume an answer choice = "if added to the evidence we already have"
Prove the conclusion = "conclusion follows logically / is properly drawn / is properly inferred"

INFERENCE = which answer can be derived from the facts above

Since the question stem you cited is asking us "Which answer, if we added it to the passage, would prove the conclusion", it's Sufficient Assumption.

The conclusion is already in the paragraph above. The answer will be a new idea that allows us to derive the conclusion in the paragraph above.

Inference just gives you facts (there is no conclusion in the paragraph), and it asks you which answer choice is a conclusion we could derive from those facts. The answer choice would be a conclusion.

SUFFICIENT ASSUMPTION

All golfers are lame. Thus Paul is lame.

Which of the following, if assume, would allow the conclusion to be properly inferred?
(A) Paul is a golfer.

INFERENCE
All golfers are lame. Paul is a golfer.

Which of the following conclusions can be properly inferred from the statements above?
(A) Paul is lame
