What Must Be True!

by chike_eze Fri Jun 10, 2011 7:59 pm

What must be, by its very nature, cannot be anything other than that which it explicitly asserts to be.

In other words, What Must Be TRUE can never be NOT TRUE (i.e. FALSE), because the very assertion that it Must Be TRUE, excludes any explicit or implicit deduction to the contrary that it is not that which it asserts to be.

(Source: maybe Aristotle, or some other Philosopher... not sure)

Any thoughts on the statement above? What do you think it means?

That is correct. If you are ever asked to find a claim that "must be true" given the information provided, that means that there is no doubt about it. The information has proved it. If you can think of scenario in which a claim is not true, in spite of the information provided, than you can eliminate that answer choice.

Be careful here. That is not true for questions that ask you to find what is "most strongly supported." Too many other LSAT programs do not distinguish between these two types of questions and which turns into one of the leading causes of student confusion.

Hope that helps!
