Sufficient Assumptions

by hnadgauda Sat Apr 22, 2017 2:07 pm

On page 58 of the LR Strategy Guide, it says the following

A successful person is also a smart person. [NOT sufficient]

A successful person is also a funny person. [NOT sufficient]

A successful person is also a smart and funny person. [IS sufficient]

I understand why they are all necessary assumptions because of the negation test; they are all required to reach the conclusion of "Therefore, Johnson is both smart and funny" from the premise of "Johnson is successful".

I don't understand why these statements are classified this way in the sufficient category. Can you please explain why?

Thanks!

"Sufficient" means "if added to the evidence, it would allow us to derive the conclusion".

So if we add #1 to the evidence, we have:
Jon is successful.
A successful person is also a smart person.

Ask yourself, "What idea (if any) can I derive from these claims?"

Answer: Jon is a smart person.

Can we derive "Jon is a smart and funny person"?

Of course not. I have no idea whether Jon is funny, when all I know is
Jon is successful.
A successful person is also a smart person.

For the 2nd one, we could derive that Jon is funny, but couldn't derive that Jon is smart.

For the 3rd one, our evidence looks like this:
Jon is successful.
A successful person is also a smart and funny person.

HERE, we can derive that Jon is smart and funny.

Hope this helps.

As a result of the assumption, we may think an individual will act surely. At that point we are found napping when they act in an unexpected way.
We made a assumption and set up a desire that the individual would carry on a specific way. The issue emerged when they carried on in a way that did not satisfy your desires.
