Setting Up Multiple Game Boards

by rebergab Tue Nov 28, 2017 8:15 pm

As I am getting to the end of my Logic Game practicing, on the more modern tests it seems as if at least one or two of the games per test almost require you to split a qualifying rule up into at least two different game boards.
I was hoping to figure out if there is a sure tell way as to alert my slow brain to recognize immediately when I should split a game board up and if so what is it?

(For example, I am currently staring at PT 66 Section 3 Game 4)

Unfortunately, there's nothing as clear cut and immediate as what you're hoping for.

We call "setting up multiple game boards" = framing.

Sometimes we create frames during the setup phase; sometimes we create frames for specific questions.

On a specific question, you're motivated to create frames because you hit a point in your thinking where you're like, "Okay, and then the GT chunk would either be 2/3 or 5/6 ... I better frame each option".

We consider making frames during the setup phase if we see
- CHUNKS with only 2 or 3 positions (although ppl like me will frame 4 positions too)

- an EITHER/OR rule that has an affect on other stuff

- any other 2 or 3 way split that has an affect on other stuff

If we had a rule that said
"H is 1 or 7", we wouldn't make two frames for that.

But if we had a rule that said
"H is 1 or 7" and another that said "M is separated by exactly one spot from H", then we might frame it.

H _ M _ _ _
and
_ _ _ _ M _ H

If you're taking the test in two days, it's too late to start experimenting with framing. Framing is never required, and sometimes we go too far in trying to find/develop frames and find out later we wished we would have just gotten into the questions more quickly.

So if you still have weeks/months of practice ahead of you, you should make a point of trying to frame every game (untimed) for a couple weeks, just so you can build up a reservoir of experience.

That experience is what helps you have a better intuitive guess as to whether a game is worth framing.

If you're in the mood to practice, try some of these:
