Q9 - Naturalist: The recent claims that

Is (c) wrong because even if we negate it: "NOT every naturalist working in the Tasmanian tiger's natural habitat has looked systematically for evidence of the tiger's survival", it doesn't necessarily destroy the conclusion? Even if NOT every naturalist looked around, perhaps the 10 out o...

Re: June 07, S2, Q23 - Philosopher: An action is morally

Hello! Can anyone explain to me why (B) is incorrect? I read the explanation from the pdf file posted with all of the June 2007 solutions, and it said: (B) is tempting, but it misses the issue. We don’t care if an action can be both right and wrong. The issue is whether it can be neither. Is it beca...

Re: Diagram

It's a tricky one. It would have to say something like "Exactly five kinds of materials can be recycled at these centers" It's probably easier to see with this example: exactly five patients - W, X, Y, Z and A - will be seen by a doctor. You know each patient will be seen. I hope that hel...

Re: Q1 - Patent Rights

Generally speaking, correct answers to necessary assumption questions show a lot of variety. For that reason, we caution our students about dismissing answer choices as out of scope without really understanding how they might affect the argument. I don’t tell my students to focus on seemingly out o...

Re: Diagram

I have a question about the scenario. It says "Exactly five kinds of material are recycled at these recycling centers: glass, newsprint, plastic, tin, and wood. Each recycling center recycles at least two but no more than three of these kinds of material." Dan wrote on his diagram: "W...

Re: LR Strategy Guide - Drill Questions

Right. The train example and this are different in that the "problems" in those assumptions would actually make the conclusion impossible. As you say, if the assumption were "switching to a less polluted area is not the reason I became more healthy" - then it would be necessary....

Re: LR Strategy Guide - Drill Questions

1. Okay, the author's argument is that the only reason he is healthier now is because he started eating better. Agreed. 2. Well, like you pointed out, there could be tons of other reasons why he is healthier and not necessarily that he started eating better. He could have exercised a lot more this ...

Q1 - The development of new inventions

Is (C) wrong because we are not concerned with the "costs incurred in applying for patent rights"? I was debating between (A) and (C) and I did pick (A) but it was out of guess between the two. I thought we might have to assume that the costs to apply for patent rights are insignificant co...

Re: LR Strategy Guide - Drill Questions

Analogously, consider this argument: I'm healthier now than I was a year ago, thus I must have started eating better. I bet you can think of debate points for that. For example, it could be that I'm living in a less polluted place and that's why I'm healthier. So, is "I'm not living in a less ...

Good question. I must admit that I was torn between (B) and (E), but upon reflection, I see that the problem with (E) is that the main issue of the passage is not the constitution's vague language, but how the provincial courts have handed interpreting the new constitutional rights. It's easy to ad...

Could someone help me answer why (B) is wrong? I would assume that if the nonstandard methods of treating disease X are more expensive now than they were a decade ago, then wouldn't money being spent on standard treatments be less than ten years ago? (B) is quite tempting, but knowing that the non-...

Re: Errata list for Atlas LSAT Strategy guides - 2nd edition

A minor error that I found this morning: Logic Games Strategy Guide pg. 95 and pg. 102 - both are the same question #7 it originally states "which one of the following, if substituted for the condition that exactly of of Robinson's novels..." but I think it should be "one of" bec...

LR Strategy Guide - Drill Questions

Came across 2 drill questions in the LR Strategy guide which I didn't agree with the correct answer... anyone please help! 1. In page 99, Drill question #3, why wouldn't "Total costs for Chad's Burger Shack were not lower in July than they were in April" be a necessary assumption...

Re: Q24

I love answering questions on the forum, because it really forces me to clean-up my thinking! I should have said that it's the main problem the author wants to address, not the main issue of the passage. That discussion was specific to Q24, where we were being asked to identify what proposal the au...

Re: Q23

That's right, it's because we need support for the idea that the author has a negative attitude towards it. But just because you say something is difficult doesn't mean you think that's a bad thing. So the passage doesn't indicate that the author has a negative attitude towards these difficulties; ...

Re: Q24 - Medical treatments on patients

Suppose we negate answer choice (E). Then the right of patients to informed consent would never outweigh the benefits of research conducted without their consent. That would mean that it is always more important for patients to consent to those treatments than to gain knowledge of the best medical ...

Re: Q24 - Medical treatments on patients

Hi.. I'm still having trouble why we HAVE to assume (E). After reading the above posts, I have some understanding as to why the remaining 4 can be eliminated, but I really can't seem to understand why (E) would be a required assumption. I feel like it is a repetition of the argument core. It feels l...
