Re: Q14 - In 1963, a young macaque

Could you check my reasoning for eliminating D)? It is different from aileenann's post, so want to verify. I thought of two possible reasonings, but couldn't decide with certainty, so help me out. To start with, "social behavior" and "genetic heritage" are two elements within the...

Re: Q13 - Companies wishing to boost

Didn't see the post dealing with all the answer choices, so I thought I'd take a shot. The argument core is: customers make two-thirds of decisions on the spot ==> companies wishing to boost sales should use in-store displays. Gap in this argument is 'in-store displays' and 'making decisions on t...

Re: Q16 - The familiar slogan "survival of the fittest"

Thank you for the reply! After reading your post, I see why it was confusing for me when I saw "the way they are popularly used." I didn't think about other ways of interpreting the term 'fittest' than biologists' way. Your illustration of the fittest (i.e. smartest) helped me see this poi...

Re: Q21 - Doctor: Medication to reduce

So, questions from "Assumption Family" will always have both at least one "missing link" and also at least one "potential objection." Got it! Sorry about the "potential objection" issue. I did mean a possible flaw that an author could exploit using assumptions...

So, my first reasoning is more sound than the second one although both are valid reasons. But it's even more sound to look at extreme language. Got it!

Thank you for the reply!

Re: Q17 - Reporter: A team of scientists

I went back and looked for an example with both "necessary" and "sufficient" assumption. I just changed a bit of words and numbers from what I found. Here it goes: A computer costs $200 dollars, so Kevin has enough money in his pocket. An assumption that could both be "neces...

Re: Q17 - Reporter: A team of scientists

While I have a specific question regarding B), I want to share my thought process as well. First of all, the Core: Among 16,000 young kids, new test successfully diagnosed 10 autisms and wrongly diagnosed 2. ==> Autistic children can benefit much earlier than before. This argument assumes that th...

Re: Q24 - Ethicist: In general it is wrong

After 2 years from last post, I thought it's okay to refresh it a bit :) Here is the core: Knowledge of the best treatment for emergency conditions can be gained only if consent to experimental practices is sometimes bypassed in medical emergencies. ==> Some restricted nonconsensual medical resea...

Re: Q16 - Historian: We can learn about

Just had a curious negating incident, so wanted to bring it up. For B), Negation of 'Some did not' would be 'All did.' I get that. But when negating sentences for other questions, I used to just drop "not" and applied negation technique. But in this case, If I just drop "not", it...

Re: Q8 - The symptoms of mental disorders

Hi, I have a question about the CORE of this passage. Taking a quick look and considering a conclusion indicator “thus” and transitional word “but”, I can figure that the premise would be “Chemical imbalance affecting brains could result in mental disorders for some people“ and the conclusion would ...

Re: Q2

The author disapproves a computer conference as a community because it 1) is a self-selecting group (53) and 2) doesn't show "genuine diversity" while the actual community, or "non-intentional" one, does. (55-59) So, in order for a group to be a true community, 1) it shouldn't be...

Re: Q16 - The familiar slogan "survival of the fittest"

Hi, I had a different reasoning for eliminating D) and didn't quite understand posted reasoning. I simply thought that we are not given anything about "using terms in the way they are popularly used", so we don't even know HOW it would affect the argument. For the same reason, negating the...

Re: Q16 - Herpetologist: Some psychologists attribute complex

Thank you for the reply! For B), I think I figured out my reasoning error. While we are looking for the assumption to reach the CONCLUSION, I was applying this assumption to the "background information." Even if this assumption would affect "background information" and eventually...

Re: Q22 - Doctors in Britain have long suspected

Thank you for the reply! Your thoughts on why I thought B) weakens the argument is pretty much correct. And combined with your reasoning, I think I understand why this is "out of scope" not "weakening." Tell me if my reasoning is wrong. Where I made a mistake was that I thought &...

Re: Q21 - Doctor: Medication to reduce

Thanks for the post! You've clarified so much for me! So, ultimately, in Necessary assumption questions, for those that have "missing" link type, we could find finite number of "link" assumption and infinite amount of assumptions for "Potential Objection" just as you sh...

Re: Q21 - Doctor: Medication to reduce

I've been told that in every argument there are infinite number of assumptions, and I am trying to identify at least some of them.. But for this question, other than the major assumption of "lifestyle change has less unhealthy impact on people than taking medication does", I can't think of...

Necessary Assumption v. Strengthen

Hi, I have a question regarding a distinction between Necessary Assumption and Strengthen Question. As I understand that the right answer choice for a strengthening question solidifies the argument in multiple ways. One of the ways is to eliminate a possible assertion that would undermine the conclu...

Re: Q22 - Doctors in Britain have long suspected

Re: Q3 - Finnish author Jaakko Mikkeli was

Hello,

Just have a question regarding D).
Would you say this is a Sufficient Assumption?
I feel like this is not REQUIRED, but assuming this would support the conclusion, so it could be a sufficient assumption, but i'm not 100% sure.

Thank you.

Re: Q16 - Herpetologist: Some psychologists attribute complex

Hi, I have a question regarding B) and E) For B), my reasoning was different from the posts, so I wanted to check if I am making a wrong turn in reasoning. If we assume B), while every behavior SHOULD BE explained in simple stimulus-response in principle, but since some behaviors still can't be expl...
