Reading questions aloud

by nicolena.franco Thu May 16, 2013 10:58 pm

I've noticed that I struggle with this section of the test, but I was going over a prep test and I'm noticing that if I read the question stem, the paragraph and the answer choices, I get the answer right. Do you have any suggestions for when I take the test?

Thank you,
Nicole

A common issue! It's strange that when you slow down enough to read the question aloud, it actually makes so much more sense. Some folks deal with this by mumbling quietly to themselves on test day. However, if I sat next to someone who did this on test day, I'd first ask them to stop, and if they continued, I'd bring over the proctor and make them stop.

This leads me to my solution... I know you've heard from others not to bring in outside information. I'm here today to tell you, they're wrong! I'm constantly trying to relate the information in the stimulus to the real world, things that I can relate to, experiences I've had, stories on the news I've heard, etc.

The reason I do this is convert words into meaning. I can understand meaning, but I don't always understand a slurry of words. Try it, maybe it will help for you!
