question 842

by samiraa180 Sun Apr 20, 2014 10:11 pm

I wasn't sure how to deduce the answer because the sketch was a little convoluted. Do the dashes indicate a box that should be left blank?

Question # 2 Results Screen

If J is assigned to exactly two days, it could be true that...

J is assigned to Weds. and Thurs.
J is assigned to Mon. and Weds.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for posting, samiraa180!

This is a classic Open Grouping game!

The dots on the diagram represent that some boxes must (or can't) be the SAME element!

Image

Thus, when we see that there are only two boxes on Thursday, labeled with one and two dots, and only one box on Wednesday, labeled with THREE dots - that's the way to represent that the same element is not allowed to go on those two days! One of the three will be on Wednesday and the OTHER two will be on Thursday.

That's why it's not allowed to have J (or any element!) on Wednesday and Thursday.

Monday and Wednesday, however, is a-okay, since we can put whatever we like on Monday with no restrictions!

Does the clear that up?

Yep! The diagram confused me because we hadn't covered it in class.
