Question 2300: Almost all players who specialize in defense.

by vincent.m Sat Apr 12, 2014 7:16 pm

I get why the right answer is right, but why is the wrong answer wrong? Isn't it just the contrapositive? Or was there a detail creep? I thought there might be a detail creep, but I was not positive. It says they no coach will play a player in a defense position, whereas the stimulus said a defense specialist in particular. I guess I could see that: What if the player is a special teams specialists or an offensive specialist, but that person can also play defense? Then the rule for defensive specialists does not apply to that player. Please confirm. Thank you!

You're on it vincent.m!

There's a term shift from "player who specializes in defense" to "player in a defense position". The first one, which matches with the stimulus, gives us a characteristic of the player. The second one gives us a characteristic of the position itself!

The incorrect answer would apply to any player in a defense position, whether they were a defensive specialist, an offensive specialist, or your little sister! The correct answer applies to all defensive specialists regardless of what position they are put in to play.

It's a very subtle language shift that actually has significant implications! It's questions like this that will help train you to get more and more sensitive to this variations in language.

Keep up the great work!
