Q8 - Nutritionist: Many people claim that simple carbohydrat

by esmail.dana Wed Aug 01, 2012 7:34 pm

Hey mlsat,

I'm having a lot of difficulty with this question. I eliminated D and E right away because of the shift in terms; D says "foods high in simple carbohydrates" when the stimulus says "high intake of simple carbohydrates."

Why are choices A, B, and C wrong? I would appreciate any bit of help on this one.

Thanks.

Good close reading on the answer choice. That is something to consider but take a step back and go through the steps.

This is a most strongly supported question stem. We are not required to have an answer choice that is logically proven and must be true. We want to find the answer choice that has the most support for it in the stimulus.

Typically, we do not have arguments when dealing with most strongly supported question stems, but this one is indeed an argument. We have a conclusion of "this is now in doubt." What is "this?" It is the idea that simple carbs is a good replacement for those fatty foods on a low-fat diet. We are given evidence for this claim: mainly that an overproduction of insulin may occur in many people, which could lead to fat storage when energy is not required by the body.

So there is some reasonable support for the claim that the simple carb replacement in the low-fat diet has concerns.

We also want to remember that this argument is qualified for this who are on low-fat diets.

A) Should avoid the simple carbs if you want to maintain energy requirements? We have support for the exact opposite.

B) We are discussing people who are on low-fat diets and whether or not it is a good idea to use simple carbs to replace the fatty foods. We are not discussing whether or not someone should feel compelled to do a diet.

C) This argument talks about people who are on low-fat diets. This answer choice does not pinpoint them and does not mention anybody on a diet.

D) We have support for this. We know that if you eat too many simple carbs, you will gain body fat. This is what happens when energy is not required and you eat simple carbs according to the stimulus. It makes sense for those who wish to not gain body fat to limit their intake of foods that do have high amounts of simple carbs. If you do not limit these high amounts of simple carbs, you run the risk of gaining body fat.

E) Absolutely no support for this. Look how strong this answer choice is: will not lose weight if those people (those do not produce the excessive insulin when consuming simple carbs) only restrict intake of simple carbs. We do not know what happens if one restricts their intake of simple carbs from the stimulus. It may have the effect of having people lose body fat.
