Q7

I think I understand why answer C is wrong here. We know that kinglets flock together during the day, but the only evidence we're given of their "call" is the theory that they may huddle together at night and "find each other by means of calling and consolidate in a central location."

The world impulse also seems wholly unsupported by the passage, as well. Though as a trap answer, it works well, at least in my case.

D is supported by the goldcrests example, but I was thrown off by the broad language. "Nocturnal behavior observed in a species related to kinglets..."

Have I just been thinking about this too long?

The question illustrates the importance of recognizing the author's stance in this passage. The author is simply explaining different hypotheses that might account for the behavior, but never actually takes a position. Towards the end, we learn that clustering together might be a possible explanation, but, again, no position is taken by the author. That is why C is wrong. It's simply too strong, indicating that we know this to be true. D, on the other hand, matches the author's tone: "might reasonably be presumed." This is a very weak answer (in a good way), and is correct.
