Q7

Hi,

Can someone kindly explain why D is wrong?

"Style vs. Technique": while certain historians of African art focus on styles and believe them to be unique to a particular tribe, in fact, these styles vary according the clients that commission them; on the other hand, the techniques are pretty much uniform (line 42) since they are made by the same ethnic tribe.

"The Case Against Historians of African Art": the structure of this passage is first explaining a (supposedly) false technique is used to studying African art history, then a quote criticizes this technique. The second paragraph explains the center of styles in order to point out why/how this technique can be incorrect. Then the last paragraph urges these scholars to stop using this technique.

How can D be wrong?

Detailed explanations much appreciated.

I think the first thing that bothers me about (D) is "Style v. Technique."

The passage is critical of the techniques used by certain historians (note: not all historians, which is another problem I have with (D)), but these aren't pitted against style as an alternative method the historians should be using. Styles of African art are discussed as a relevant point, but not as an alternative the historians should be using instead of their techniques. The "versus" just doesn't actually make sense, in other words. And the second part of (D), which is about all historians of African art, is too extreme. The purpose of this passage is not to undermine all of the African art historians. The passage is careful to state that it questions "certain" historians (line 2), and it's important to note words like that. (Plus, rarely will a passage be critical of ALL of anyone or anything.)

(A) is milder but captures what the passage here is doing, which is evaluating how African centers of style can inform art classifications.

(B) makes it all about commercialization and tourism, which does not describe the passage.

(C) makes it about the visual character of the art, which is also off.

(E) is too narrow. The passage is about African art more generally, not just the Konate.

Hope this helps clarify!
