7. (D)
Question Type: Application

Answer (D) is the only answer that presents a person acting free of calculated self-interest or the desire to adhere to societal norms. In (D), Jadine’s actions are based on an abstract principle that protecting the environment is more important than monetary gain.

(A) describes Bobby as one who is influenced by how others perceive him.
(B) describes Wes as one who is influenced by how others perceive him.
(C) describes Donna as one who is influenced by how others perceive her.
(E) describes Leigh as one who is influenced by how others perceive her.

Can you please elaborate more on what we are supposed to do exactly for this question? we are trying to find an answer that is in contrast .. free of self-interest or the desire to adhere to societal norms, is that right?
If so then I'm just confused how answer D is free of the desire to adhere to societal norms.

Answer choice (D) is free of the desire to adhere to societal norms and conventions. Notice that the belief that protecting the environment is more important than profits is Jadine's own belief. In the two answers (A) and (E), that present the adherence to societal norms and conventions they hinge on peoples' beliefs being affected by others.

The view in answer choice (D) is free of the adherence to someone else's view.

Application question type I believe as in using a principle demonstrated in the passage like an individual who has a moral motivation based on abstract principles the kind contrasted with calculated self-interest or the desire to adhere to societal norms and conventions.

Yeah, nowadays our books would refer to this as Principle-Example, which is when the stimulus gives you a rule (or two), and then you're examining answers to see which one best follows the rule.
