Q7 - Dr. Jones: The New technology

by hamham Mon Mar 02, 2015 10:53 pm

The correct answer (E) states: whether the technology of telemedicine will benefit rural patients in the long run.

The bolded part bugs me a bit. I understand that Dr. Carabella disagrees with (E). But how do I know that Dr. Jones agrees that it will benefit rural patients in the long run? He just says that it will benefit rural patients but we don't know that it will benefit them in the long run?

Thank you :)

Is it because Dr. C responds by saying, "Not so. Telemedicine might help rural patients initially." So we can assume that Dr. Jones is saying telemedicine will help rural patients for a long period, but Dr. C is saying only initially and not in the long run?

Hi Hamham,

Thanks for your question. I think you answered it perfectly here:

Is it because Dr. C responds by saying, "Not so. Telemedicine might help rural patients initially." So we can assume that Dr. Jones is saying telemedicine will help rural patients for a long period, but Dr. C is saying only initially and not in the long run?

I will just add that Dr. Jones says that “telemedicine will provide sustained improvement in at least rural patient care.”

Putting those two quotes together, we know that Dr. Carabella sees “initial help” followed by an eventuality that “it will be the rare individual who ever gets truly personal attention.” Dr. Jones, on the other hand, sees sustained improvement.

(A) Is unsupported. Dr. J talks about advice a rural patient “would not otherwise receive,” but neither doctor implies that medical specialists offer “better” advice.
(B) Is unsupported; “only” is extreme.
(C) Is unsupported; neither doctor addresses the likeliness of adoption.
(D) Is unsupported; neither doctor differentiates “the patients who most need advice.”

Hope this helps.

Best,
Rina
