When you do RC questions that ask what can be inferred, what is suggested, what is implied, what is someone most likely to agree with, make sure you have a keen, picky eye for extreme language.
It is EASILY your best friend when it comes to raising huge doubts about certain answers.
As I scan these answers, here is what jumps out at me
A) cannot ... any
B) elegant
C) most .... any ... any
D) thoughtful
E) antipathy
Of these, (B) and (D) are instantly the most attractive, because 'elegant' and 'thoughtful' aren't very extreme. 'Elegant' definitely necessitates some complimentary adjective in the text in order to support it. 'Thoughtful' barely needs supporting text, since a poet has obviously thought about what he writes about.
The "most" in (C) is a total dealbreaker. The rest of the answer is also a stretch for anything talked about in the passage, but I would feel comfortable getting rid of (C) unless there were anything I could point to in the passage that matched the strength of 'the MOST fruitful way to understand Lum's poetry'.
The author never insisted on any particular emphasis that provides the *best* insight into Lum, so this answer does not have sufficient support.
In terms of supporting (D), the passage depicts Lum's poetry as attempting to straddle two main goals:
- connecting to Asian heritage/ancestry/tradition
- creating a new identity infused by the unique multiculturalism of Hawaii
The idea of creating a new identity is mentioned in line 11, lines 28-29, line 43, and line 58.
The 'ancestral homeland tradition' is dealt with in the 2nd paragraph, in reference to the traditional Chinese lunar celebration and the famous Chinese poet Li Po.
Hope this helps.
