Q6 - Chronic fatigue syndrome is characterized

by pateljay.osu Thu May 09, 2013 9:10 pm

I understand why answer choice (B) is correct, but I do not understand why answer choice (A) can be eliminated. Does anyone have a compelling reason to eliminate (A)? Thanks.

SO the stimulus tells us that CFS is characterized by three symptoms X, Y, and Z. The question is, is each symptom the product of its own virus or does one virus cause all three symptoms? Then we learn that a specific antiviral drugs lessens all three of XYZ and on the basis of this, the stimulus concludes that there is evidence that all three symptoms are caused by one virus.

Whats the assumption? Well, if you are concluding that something can be used as evidence for something else, you must be assuming that there is a probable link between the evidence and what you are trying to prove. If you thought that there is probably not a link, well then it wouldn't make sense to conclude that the evidence applies. This is best expressed in answer choice B.

A) is not necessary to assume because prolonged fatigue and neurological problems can each individually be symptoms of a whole host of diseases. For example, someone with Alzheimers does not have to have prolonged fatigue as well for us to draw our conclusion about using the success of an antiviral drug as evidence that all three symptoms of a disease are caused by a single virus.

Hope this help.
