Before you look at answer choices, you should revisit this part of the passage. We'd read line 22, but also +/- a sentence.
In doing so, we see that "transliterated" is actually used IN CONTRAST to "direct translations", making (D) the opposite of what we want.
"Some are transliterated terms ... others are direct translations".
Do you see how that implies that transliterated terms are NOT direct translations?
The only example we have to go off of is "downtown" = dang-tang, and we can see how the same, two-syllable "d___ - t___" is happening, so that seems to match what (A) is describing.
