The rules provided at the outset of a game ALWAYS apply.
When we do "if" (conditional) questions, we get an ADDITIONAL rule that we have to follow, for that problem only.
For Q5, we need to incorporate a KH block and an LF block.
Because of rule 5, the KH block joins our preexisting HG block to form an KHG block.
Because of rule 1, that F is on 3 or 5, we could say that LF will either be 2/3 or 4/5.
Of course, rule 2 tells us that L can NOT be on 4, so LF on 4/5 is not possible.
Thus, we definitely have
__ L F __ __ __ __
Where can KH go?
4/5/6 or 5/6/7
But 4/5/6 is not possible because of rule 4. If K is on 4, L must be 5.
So we definitely have
__ L F __ K H G
Who's left?
J, M
We know that J can't be 1, because of rule 3. So we get
M L F J K H G
So the answer is (D), J must go 4th.
===========
For future reference, Q6 should have its own thread on the forum, but this time I'll just put it here.
G and L are both before F, so
HG and L are both before F.
F has to be 3 or 5, but if we put him on 3, there wouldn't be room for HG and L to fit in before.
So F must be 5.
__ __ __ __ F __ __
We know that HG and L are in the first four spots.
We know from rule 4, that since F is on day 5, K can NOT be on day 4.
Overall, though, it seems like we have some flexibility. Maybe we just try writing a could be true or maybe we just start testing answer choices.
(A) is out because we know where F is.
(B) could G be 3?
__ H G __ F __ __
We still have L, M, K
L would have to be 1 or 7 (since it can't be 4 or 6), and for this question we know that L has to be before F. So L must be 1. And we know K can't be 4 because of rule 4.
L H G M F K J
One more time through the rules. Looks good?
Looks good.
(B) works!
