Q5 - From a magazine article

by davsoko Wed Jul 31, 2013 2:34 pm

I had it narrowed between C and D. I wasn't really sure what an authority meant in this context.

Any help explaining this one?

We're told that self-confidence is dangerous for the reason that it easily degenerates into arrogance, and that arrogance is:

-Obvious
-A vice
-Characterized the most notorious bad guys of the century

(A) Author definitely does this--Hitler is pretty extreme.
(B) Does use the word "vice."
(C) The illustration of Hitler and Statin to demonstrate arrogance seems to fit this description.
(D) What authority is appealed to? Hmm. None. The author never says, "We should listen to Ghandi," or Mother Theresa, or anyone who could be viewed as an authority. Probably the answer.
(E) Does this.

And yes, (D) it is.
