Q4

by poirot Wed Jan 22, 2014 12:15 pm

Question 4 really threw me off and I was hoping that someone could help me out. from the question stem. I haven't been able to write out hypotheticals that actually show or disprove the answers...

For Answer C, I ended up with
O or U on Monday and Tuesday, X on Wed, NS block on Thursday and PT on Friday. However, there is also that rule that states that U and X are the only jobs that can take an entire day each, and in this case O, the floater, violates the rule. I can't seem to be able to rearrange the sequence or come up with an alternate hypo though. Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

Hi, there.

Just so you know, we created a Diagram thread for this game as well:
diagram-t8500.html

In terms of Q4, if we know that there are two jobs on Thurs and two jobs on Friday, then we know that Thurs is NS and Fri is PT.

As you said, this leaves X alone, U alone, and O alone.

You were concerned that O being alone would violate rule 4, but rule 4 only says that U and X are the only jobs that must take an entire day. It's still possible that other jobs COULD take an entire day.

You should read the diagram link, because it will flesh out this concept more, but the way this game is set up, EVERY possible scenario for this game will involve P, T, or O taking up an entire day.

We'll always have a U day, an X day, and an NS day.

With the two days left, we have to fit in P, T, and O. Well that means that one of those two days will have two of those three, and the other day will have only one.

Confusing wording in Rule 4, for sure, but as you were noticing there's no way to EVER construct a scenario without having one letter, in addition to X and U, be alone.

Hope this helps.
