Q3 - The number of calories

by john.as.camacho Sat Aug 09, 2014 11:02 am

I narrowed my choices to A and E. Is A wrong because the issue is about non-caloric nutrients?

So the core here is:

gram of refined sugar has the same number of calories as a gram of fructose --> a piece of candy with with the same amount of refined sugar as fruit has fructose has the same calories

But what if calories are also coming from something other than sugar?

(E) gets at this!

You're exactly right as to why (A) is wrong, too! Well done. Out of scope.

As for the others:

(B) isn't true—the argument is talking about candy that has a certain amount of sugar (the same as the fruit), not all candy.

(C) is also not true.

(D) gets the assumption wrong. The assumption is that there aren't other ingredients that have calories (which is E).

Hi,

could you elaborate why D is incorrect?

wouldn't the author HAVE to make the assumption that a piece of fruit contains the same amount of calories as a piece of candy, in order for their argument to work.

in which case, they are already assuming what they need to establish in the argument.
