Q3

by TommyN404 Sun May 24, 2020 12:56 pm

Could someone please explain why answer choice C is wrong?

I thought it made sense that the author would agree that the critics should acknowledge inevitable mutilations so that their criticisms take into account how mutilations may alter the audience's interpretation to be different from the film maker's intent... Because isn't the author arguing that a problem with criticisms is that they ignore the external factors that alter the interpretation?

Thanks.

Thanks for your patience. We're catching up with some questions that slipped by us recently.

The word "inevitable" creates a problem for choice (C). Line 7 states that the qualities of films are "often" altered. Line 10 states that a film "can" be mutilated in the process of being distributed. Lines 41-45 indicate that films can be reproduced without distortion, even if that "rarely" occurs. Finally, lines 50-51 indicate that critics have the opportunity to view un ompromised versions of films. So, the mutilations might be commonplace, but calling them "inevitable" is too extreme. Choice (C) is very tempting for the reasons you described, but that word "inevitable" makes it incorrect.

Can someone explain the support for (A)? Over at PowerScore they refer to the words "under ideal conditions" as being crucial to establishing support for (A), in addition to the discussion of speeding up being "detrimental." Finding "ideal" as support for (A) seems like finding a needle in a haystack though...is the takeaway here that I should pay much closer attention to quasi-normative words like "ideal" when they show up?
