Q3 - Muscular Strength is a limited

by sayruss11 Mon May 03, 2010 12:11 pm

Can anyone tell me why C is the right answer as opposed to B?

Oh, as usual, the devil is in the details!

The conclusion of the argument is everything after the words "it follows that." The conclusion states that superior mastery of athletic techniques is a requirement for an athlete to become a champion. Answer choice (C) says this exactly. Answer choice (B) says that superior muscular strength is a requirement for an athlete to become a champion.

I know the stimulus starts with a discussion of superior muscular strength, but the conclusion is only that part of the stimulus after "it follows that." Here we're lucky because the conclusion is stated explicitly. Sometimes these Identify the Conclusion questions have implicit conclusions, which obviously are more tricky!

Can someone please review how one would diagram answer choice (C)? I was able to arrive at this answer by POE but I would also like to understand the question from a conditional reasoning perspective.

Thank you very much!

(C) you would diagram as...

Athlete w/o athletic techniques -> ~champion
contrapositive is:
champion -> Athlete w/ athletic techniques

so, in order to be a champion it requires athletic techniques

And I would notate it:

Athlete + Champion --> Superior Athletic Techniques

The word "without" indicates the required condition of achieving the other terms.
