Re: PT 59 Section 4, P4, Q 26

The question asks us to find a statement that could logically conclude the final paragraph. The final paragraph is about why do people respond angrily to a perceived unfair offer, when we would expect them to accept anything that advances their own self-interest. The answer provided is that responding angrily is way to increase the chances that future offers will be fair. Answer choices (C) and (D) are the only ones on topic, but answer choice (D) takes a fall when it discusses other benefits. So, answer choice (C) is the correct answer.

(A) contradicts the information presented in the last paragraph of the passage.
(B) is out of scope. This would be a good logical step to take if we were trying to criticize human behavior as outdated for the world we live in. But that is not the point of the final paragraph.
(D) is unsupported. The paragraph does not address the other benefits that are derived from living in small groups.
(E) is too narrow in scope. What constitutes a fair division is discussed in the initial paragraph but not in the final paragraph.

I don't understand how a logical conclusion implies bringing up new evidence, or another interpretation. I thought the conclusion would tie into everything as a whole, thats why I picked (E) as an option.

Is (C) right because the author criticizes the first theory for just explaining one side of the story, and then himself only explains 1 side of the story. Thus, by adding on (C), it helps explain both sides and reduces that hypocrisy?

To be clear, we're not looking for "the conclusion." Instead we're looking at the purpose/content of the final paragraph which is to describe why people sometimes get upset when they receive unfair offers. Answer choice (E) is neither true, nor mentioned in the last paragraph

Answer choice (C) is correct because it essentially paraphrases the final sentence of the passage here.

Hope that helps!

I don't see how it paraphrases it though. I guess it deals with a similar topic and offers some additional insight - is that we should look for while answering these types of questions? Basically what the paragraph discusses, and something that builds of that.

Try not to build too much off the portion of the passage that the answer choice is supposed to conclude or continue. It should essentially restate the information in a slightly different way. Answer choice (C) does this. The last sentence says that building a reputation can be beneficial - explaining why some proposers in the Ultimatum Game make "fair" offers.

Keep asking this great questions, it'll all come together eventually! It's tough because half the battle is figuring out, how the LSAC would answer the question. This can really help you minimize deliberating on answer choices.

Hi, I'm not sure about the question "which would most logically conclude...." I guess this question is different from "which would logically summarize"? The latter one asks to summarize the whole paragraph, whereas the former one asks us to find one sentence that can be put at the end of the paragraph? Thank you!

Dont know if this is right but i chose C b/c the last sentence of the last paragraph only concludes about "low offers" though the rest of the paragraph also talks about accepting "fair" offers.

So i chose C since it would complete the partial conclusion

I solved this question from a different perspective. When I read the answer choices, (c) immediately pops out (not to be cocky). Here is why. If you pay attention to how the passage goes, you'll find that first, the support-of-group theory does not explain why responders reject low offers (line 37), which is why the author gives the more compelling explanation - reputation theory. This reputation theory successfully explains why people reject outrageously low offers, that is, they do this to survive. OK! Wait a second, how about the behavior of making fair offers??? The reputation has not explained that yet! Gladly, (C) brings this into life.
You guys are welcome.

P.S. I also think that you can get this question by following Matt's method, that is, the paraphrase of last sentence in the passage.

I agree with what Matt said above; furthermore, line 44 - 51 mentioned why people may have the incentives to make a fair offer, either because the receiver had rejected a low offer or evolution favor receiving a fair offer.
