Q25 - Economist: Although obviously cuts

by dan Wed Jul 28, 2010 5:29 pm

25. (E)
Question type: Analyze the Structure

This argument is very challenging to understand completely. Fortunately, that’s not the required task; the question simply requires that we decide on the author’s main point. Her point, mentioned at the beginning, is that across-the-board tax cuts disproportionately benefit the wealthy. Answer choice (E) states this, and is therefore correct.

(A) represents an incorrect understanding of the text.
(B) may be true, but it is not the main point of the author.
(C) is true according to the text, but it is not the main point of the author.
(D) is true according to the text, but it is not the main point of the author.

Can't believe I got this wrong. Sigh..

The first sentence IS the conclusion. He states "although obviously.." which means an established fact he is NOT going to be discussing in much depth, then gets into across the board cuts having the same effect - benefiting rich people.

Everything after the first sentence is simply support for the fact that across the board cuts = benefiting the rich.

(E) is the right answer here.

The other answers are incorrect due to scope, or take things that are true from the argument and use them as answer choices in hopes that you will read it and lose focus of the fact you are looking for the CONCLUSION, not for any random fact said in this convoluted stimulus.
