I don't think we ever get a verbatim reference to "overall pattern", but lines 18-19 mention that 'early bordered specimens' (which we can infer are pre-1890 Anglo influence) had an 'enclosing pattern'.
Also, lines 25-26 refer to 'The older patterns', in contrast to the 1890-and-beyond blank area which suggested using isolated figures.
Even the rest of line 21-25 gives us another rough paraphrase of 'overall pattern' by saying that 'traditional, banded Navajo designs
were continuous ', i.e. patterned.
