Q24

by jiyoonsim Tue Aug 23, 2011 11:20 pm

I have a trouble fully understanding why C) is the correct answer (my answer was A).
Yes, I understand the main theme is defining professional. But wouldn't that also mean the author is not a fan of throwing physicians in the batch of trade? Please explain...thanks!

Personally opinion and reason for eliminating ans A is that it asks you the questions "introduce" which one of the following, so the question is "why physicians resist the new meaning", then the reasonable ans for this question should be "trade" is not a proper word for practicing medicine, why? because from etymology point of view, knowledge and "something else", which in conclusion, should be ans C "nature of the practice of medicine".

In general, the whole passage is trying to answer that question, so question 24 is actually sort of asking the purpose of this passage.

Hope this makes sense.

Could you give a shot at explaining why you'd eliminate D? I think sensible is an attractive word, given that it's used, but perhaps this isn't necessarily a "concentrated defense" despite the passage listing potential ways that medicine is a profession.

Thank you!

Any reason why D is not right? Seems strong, it is the point of the author, to rally people behind defending doctor as a professional

I think D can be ruled out because the author doesn't give "suggestion for rallying". Also, the passage doesn't indicate if the author would want "a concentrated defense". even though the author himself/herself is giving defense for physicians.
Besides, the goal of this "why" sentence alone seems more close to "Do you wonder why they resist? Do you wonder why they care medicine to be considered trade or a profession? (In other word, why this matters) Let me tell you in the rest of my arguments." Therefore, this sentence doesn't seem a suggestion, but more of an inquiry.
