Q23

by weiyichen1986 Wed Jul 03, 2013 6:53 pm

Hi, for this question, i see B is correct, but i have hard time eliminating E, i thought the whole paragraph is about the peoplehood of japanese is beyond families ties, and local ties (the last sentence of this paragraph), and why is the quote also not support this main idea of this paragraph? Thanks

Good question, thanks for bringing this one to the forum!

Lets take a look at the question. It's asking us to describe the author's purpose in quoting Fugita and O'Brien in lines 36-39. The third paragraph is about providing the support offered by Fugita and O'Brien for there study. In particular it's about the notability (difference) between the Japanese-American community and other immigrant communities. Notice the word "because" (line 36) that separates this distinction and the quote. This supports answer choice (B) as the purpose of the author in quoting Fugita and O'Brien.

Incorrect Answers
(A) describes the wrong purpose. The author is providing Fugita and O'Brien's support in this paragraph, not undermining their position.
(C) correctly describes the role as support for Fugita and O'brien, but for the wrong contention--this is not about the high degree of adaptation.
(D) describes the wrong purpose. The author is providing Fugita and O'Brien's support in this paragraph, not undermining their position.
(E) describes the wrong purpose. This is about supporting a comparative difference between the Japanese-American community and other communities. The issue of a sense of "peoplehood" is an explanation for the comparative difference, but the quote does not serve to emphasize this contention.
