Q22

by hyewonkim89 Sun Nov 10, 2013 7:04 am

Hi,

I was down to (A) and (D) and luckily got this question right.

But I'm still having a hard time eliminating (D) completely.

I picked (A) because the passage says "we often retain the new data as a reinforcement." So I figured the new data were used as support for the incomplete memories.

Is (D) wrong because the new data are not "reinterpreted"?

Thanks in advance!

You nailed it on both counts!

The idea of "reinterpreting" the data sounds more like "We hear new data ... it doesn't mesh with our memory of the event, so we reinterpret, i.e. alter, the new data so that it BECOMES compatible with our memory."

But the passage didn't really discuss what happens when the new data is incompatible.

It only talked about new data that IS already compatible, saying we are equally likely to accept it whether it
- matches what we already remembered
or
- fills in a gap of what we don't remember

nice work.
