Q22

by romanmuffin Sun Aug 07, 2011 10:57 pm

I am confused by the wording on this one. Does the correct answer choice mean that at least the puppy or the kitten (or both) on display on one of the days is different?
Kind of confusing wording.

From the constraint in the question, I can infer that day 2 has Himalayan and Newfoundland on display and day 6 has Himalayan and Greyhound on display.

Even though both days display Himalayans, does the fact that the puppy breed is different on those days make answer B correct?

Can someone work through this problem with me? I can see why B is correct if my logic above is sound, but I can't seem to wrap my head around why the other choices are necessarily wrong.

From the rules, we know that the key to this game is the placement of the variable H. It is featured on 3 days. It cannot go on Day 1. We know it must go 3 times during the time span of Day 2 to Day 7. We also know that not only H, but any variable, cannot be featured on consecutive days.

I decided to find out the possible placement options for H in this game:

Thus, I knew these were the placement options...

I then decided to show the four scenarios of this game. Basically 4 templates or frames.

Scenario 1: (3-5-7 option for H)

Image

Scenario 2: (2-5-7 option for H)

Scenario 3: (2-4-6 option for H)

Scenario 4: (2-4-7 option for H)

For question #22, the local condition tells us that H is not featured on day 7. We only have 1 scenario for that! That is our 2-4-6 scenario.

We can quickly see that B is the right answer. It is impossible for day 2 and 6 to feature the same kitten and puppies.

The wording of this question is really like this:

Which pair of days is it impossible to have the same kitten AND puppy on BOTH days.

For choice A, it is possible to have the same exact ones on day 1 and 3.

And ditto on all of them except for B! This is because N must be shown on day 2 in this scenario and on day 7. Since this is the case, there is no way that N could be shown on day 6, because it is already forced into day 7. We cannot have a variable shown on consecutive days.
