Q22 - Nursing schools cannot attract

by jiyoonsim Thu Aug 04, 2011 10:07 pm

I'll just share how I figured this one out, so please comment if I am missing anything or there is a better way to do this.

My answer: D
Right answer: E

This was really confusing stem at first time, but as I review I could map out the stem.

low wage + stress -> ~attract ppl -> shortage, lower standard -> ~quality maintain

D) isn't the best answer, since the low wage and strees will lead to either shortage or lower standard. D doesn't mention lower standard.

E) Safe to say so, according to the map!

And another way to map out the stimulus would look like...

GNA ---> SP
~GNA ---> LS or AS
LS or AS ---> ~MHQ

Notation Key: GNA = greater number of nurses, SP = solve the problems of low wages and high stress, LS = lower standards, AS = acute shortage of nurses, MHQ = maintain high quality

We can take the contrapositive of the first conditional and then link them all through so

~SP --> ~MHQ
perfectly expressed in answer choice (E)

Let's look at the incorrect answers.

(A) SP --> GNA ... represents a reversal of the first premise
(B) ~GNA --> LS ... does not have to be true because there could be an acute shortage of nurses instead
(C) SP ---> MHQ ... represents a negation of what could be inferred from the three premises
(D) ~SP ---> AS ... does not have to be true because they could just lower their standards

(A) and (C) represent either reversals or negations and (B) and (D) play off the fact that an "or" statement does not guarantee that either one will actually occur, but rather that at least one will occur.

Nice work jiyoonsim!

I think D) should be mapped as ~SP-> Shortage of nurse, so in this sense, D) is right.

However, if you argue from the point that it fails to mention the other consequence(i.e. lowering the entrance standard) it makes sense to drop D) and choose E).
