Q21 - Low Blood Cholesterol and Cerebral Hemorrhage

by nandy_millette Tue Jun 24, 2014 4:07 pm

This is a Necessary Assumption Question.

P- People with low blood cholesterol (LBC) are at increased risk of cerebral hemorrhage (CH) because LBC weakens artery walls making them prone to rupture

C- This supports the view that Western diets better protect aganist CH than non- Western diets.

This argument is flawed because it makes a leap from the cause of CH to the difference in the level of protection against CH provided by Western v.s. non Western diets. The author does not provide the required support for the conclusion made.

The correct NA would provide some BRIDGE between the cause of CH and the differences between Western vs. non Western diets.

A. The argument is not about whether Western diets are healthier than non Western diets but rather if Western diets provide better protection against CH. In order for this AC to work we will have to make the added assumption that healthier diets give better protection against CH. I would classify this answer choice as being Out of Scope.

B. Correct Answer- If Western diets result in higher blood cholesterol than non Western diets then we can conclude that they are more effective at protecting against CH since the stimulus explicitly states that low blood cholesterol puts people at increased risk of CH.

C. Is incorrect because it does not allow us to reach the conclusion that western diets better protect against CH than non Western diets. In order for this to work, we will also have to add that Western diets are higher in high blood cholesterol than non Western diets.

D. Incorrect. A comparison between CH and blood clots is irrelevant, Like C. above it does not allow us to reach the conclusion that western diets better protect against CH than non Western diets.

E. This just restates the premise. Incorrect
