Q20 - A certain viral infections

by jardinsouslapluie5 Sun May 06, 2012 7:29 am

I chose correct answer (B).
But, it just because other choices were not good enough.
Could you explain why (B) is correct?
Thank you.

I think I interpreted (B) a little differently.

It's telling us that the viral infection makes children particularly susceptible to a bacterial infection in the middle ear.

Thus, it's no surprise that the antibiotics help these children get rid of the bacterial ear infection, since we're told that antibiotics are "effective in treating bacterial infections".

The original trickery was that in the 1st sentence, we're told that children with this viral infection develop a middle ear infection.

We probably all initially assume that the middle ear infection is also viral, but (B) suggests to us that the middle ear infection is bacterial.

Hope this helps.

I should have been more clear. In terms of a separate issue, I should have said that the middle ear infection is a bacterial infection rather than a viral infection. This explains why the antibiotic works on it and not the viral infection, as it is effective with bacterial infections.

Answer choice D lets us know the middle ear infections are indeed bacterial.

I interpreted C to mean what B intended to say, that the children with middle ear infections whose ears cleared up did not have virus, but just middle ear infection.

Is C wrong because B implies that the infection grew out of the virus, while B merely states that the children did not have virus to begin with, which would be false?

Please help.

Thanks.

Yeah, I think you nailed it there at the end.

If you look back at the "Yet" statement in the stimulus, it says "when middle ear infections in children infected with the virus are treated with antibiotics ..."

So (C) is irrelevant to these kids. (C) is about kids who DON'T have the virus. The question we're being asked is about kids who DO have the virus.

I'm still a little confused…

May I suggest that if the question is just a must be true, then C will be correct?

And, there's nothing about children who haven't been injected with virus, what if 50percent of them will develop middle ear? ( I know it's unrealistic, but it is not mentioned in the stimulus…Did I go too far?
