Q2 - The teeth of some mammals

by kmewmewblue Thu Dec 29, 2011 1:16 am

I don't understand the stimulus.
And I can't get the clue from "width."

Thank you in advance

Q2 - The teeth of some mammals

This stimulus provides a set of facts from the which the question asks to determine the answer choice that is most strongly supported. So the correct answer does not have to be true based on the statements, but it needs to make the most logical sense.

The layers of cementum grow on teeth according to a pattern. Over the summer months opaque layers form, while over the winter months translucent layers form. If the pigs were found to have on the surface of their teeth layers of translucent bands that were only half way developed, that would suggest that the pigs were half through the process of laying down the layer of tooth that grows during the winter. So the evidence indicates that the animals were killed during the winter period of tooth development - best expressed in answer choice (C).

Let's look at the incorrect answer choices:

(A) is unsupported. That the pigs died in winter is supported, but not a winter that arrived early. There's no way to know when the seasons were arriving.
(B) is tempting if you interpret the claim about the "remarkably constant width" to be referring to the teeth as opposed to the layers of cementum.
(D) is unsupported. The cause of death cannot be determined from the information provided.
(E) is unsupported. The cause of death cannot be determined from the information provided.

Hope that helps!
