What would you say is wrong with answer choice A?? The word "guide"?? I almost picked it because social change seems to be what Mphahlele is going after, but wasn't sure if it was necessarily a "guide" on how to achieve social change, so didn't pick it.. but is something else wrong with this answer choice? Do I have the correct reason for eliminating it?

You have exactly the right reason for eliminating (A)---it is contradicted. Read lines 35-40. Mphahlele does in fact have a vision for the future, but "provides no road maps for bringing such a future about." He has a vision, but won't give his readers a guide for achieving it.
