PT 56 S4 Q2

by didi0504 Sun Nov 14, 2010 10:45 pm

I picked D b/c I thought it's a better answer, but I don't quite know why E is wrong?

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for your post.

So, we're looking for something that would most exemplify Tutuola's style.

(D) is correct because we're told in lines 46-47 that Tutuola embellishes tales by transferring them to modern settings.

(E) is tempting, because Tutuola does use an omniscient character, but be careful! We have to read the entire answer choice closely. Would "original stories about contemporary Irish life" exemplify Tutuola's approach? No, because he doesn't tell original stories, he tells folk tales, and he uses the omniscient narrator as a recognizable way to conclude those tales.

(A) is wrong because Tutuola is not described as applying conventions of the modern novel.

(B) is wrong because Tutuola is a writer, not an oral storyteller.

(C) suggests some cultural borrowing that Tutuola doesn't do.

Does that clear this one up for you?

I eliminated E for the above reason and because he doesn't utilize an omniscient voice to tell the story; he uses the voice to summarize the story at the end.

Lines 53-55 - "...for example in the adoption of an omniscient, summarizing voice at the end of his narratives..."

I was actually stuck between B and D and went with the right answer. However, I'm not fully convinced of why B is wrong. Broadly, Tutuola's approach was to take something old/traditional and put it into another medium (from oral story to written text) while keeping some of the major traditional elements (despite adding new details and twists). Wouldn't this relationship be best exemplified in answer choice B?

From literary to oral would actually be the opposite then of oral to literary? You're making an argument but it's just too much of a stretch. If it's actually the opposite of the phenomenon in the passage there's very little chance it will be right, even if abstractly you can make an argument that it is parallel.
