Hello,

While I understand that the Woolf novel must be on the third shelf. I'm having a hard time seeing why D is not true. Doesn't the Semantics Monograph need to be on the first shelf if the H-Grammar and Phonetics monograph are on the same shelf??

I'm a big fan of framing this game. There are a number of ways to do it, but my favorite is to frame around the rule that the Vonnegut novel and the two monographs all have to be separated (the three-way antichunk rule): so frame around where the Vonnegut novel goes. Check out the frames:



After placing the Vonnegut novel and the monographs, the next step is to figure where the Farsi grammar (and its novel partner) can be in each frame. If the Vonnegut novel is on the second shelf, the Farsi grammar can go two places, so that frame splits into two. The Hausa grammar takes whatever spot is left.

If you've framed in this way, you can quickly play out the conditional onto each frame and see that the Woolf novel is on the 3rd shelf every time. The semantics monograph doesn't have to be on the 1st shelf though - in Frame I it's on the 3rd! Take a look:



Now, if you didn't frame, you can still play this conditional out. Consider that the Hausa grammar and the phonology monograph can be together either on the second or third shelf. Check out the diagram:



If they are together on the third shelf, the Farsi grammar (and novel partner) can only fit on the second shelf. That novel partner can't be Woolf, because then the three-way antichunk rule would get broken. The semantics monograph is forced onto the first shelf, to get away from the phonology monograph and the Vonnegut novel, leaving the Woolf novel to take the final remaining spot on the third shelf.

Now, if they are together on the second shelf, the Farsi grammar (and novel partner) only have space on the third shelf. The Woolf novel can't be on the first shelf, or the three-way anti-chunk rule won't work - so it must be on the third shelf. This leaves the Vonnegut novel and the semantics monograph fighting over the two remaining spots. Either way would work - so the semantics monograph does not have to be on the first shelf.

Does this help clear things up a bit? Remember that the Farsi grammar has to be with a novel, but that doesn't have to be the Vonnegut novel necessarily!
