The last paragraph begins with Broyles-Gonzalez saying, essentially, that Valdez did NOT individually invent actos as a genre.

Why doesn't she believe that Valdez is individually responsible?

She thinks that the farm workers' already had some experience with improvisation, doing shows known as carpas. Line 51-54 asserts how these actors helped shaped the actos by adapting their familiarity with carpas.

The author shows he/she agrees with this in the final lines of the passage, 54-61. The line that says that the "resulting actos were neither carpas nor ..." Valdez's theater background, " .. but a distinctive genre with connections to both."

So Broyles-Gonzalez and the author both agree that the farm workers' familiarity with carpas helped to influence the ultimate form of the actos.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have lingering questions.

Thanks for the helpful response, Patrick. That cleared up a lot.

I ended up picking the correct answer for the reasons you mentioned, but there is one thing that bothered me about (C). After reading the final paragraph, I got the impression that the author and Bryoles-Gonzalez ascribed different levels of significance towards the carpas insofar as B-G appears to believe that carpas had a greater impact on the development of the actos than the author (line 46 mentions that B-G traces "especially" the carpas while the author dilutes carpas by positing that it is actually a duality between carpas and Valdez). So when I encountered #18, the phrase "same attitude toward" seemed slightly ambiguous. It's true that they believe that carpas were significant, but I'm not clear if they hold the "same attitude" about this significance.

Am I reading too much into this? Or maybe I'm just off point? Thanks in advance for your help

Haha, you are not alone. And I guess that's why "essentially" is used in the question stem.

I keyed in a word that immediately jumped out at me... however, nobody has mentioned this so far. Notice how the last paragraph begins with "rightly criticizes...". I immediately knew that this word equates to agreement between author and B-G. Once you catch this key word and read further into the paragraph, the entire structure becomes super clear and you can easily answer this question.

But isn't the author's main point that while there was some influence from the carpas on actos, Valdez's contribution was critical. So here lies a differences because clearly Yolanda disagrees, as she places more emphasis on the influence the carpas had. I understand that C is the best answer, but is it really a "good choice." It seems more like the best of the worse.

The LSAT is like dating...sometimes you just have to take the best of the worst.
