Q17 - Industrial adviser: If two new

by jon7ng Sat Aug 27, 2011 7:04 pm

Could someone help me with this one? It's so long and so confusing! I narrowed it down to A C and E. Thanks!

Didn't even bother with this one when I got to it during my timed PT. Took one look at it and was like "Nope... Next!"

Rule 1: If 2 processes are not substantially different in cost, then choose process with less damaging impact on environment

Rule 2: If already environmentally damaging process, then only consider replacing with a more expensive process if
1. It is a legal requirement or
2. Long-term savings are substantially greater than cost

Correct = (C) Process A is not substantially more expensive than B. And Process A is less damaging on environ. than B, therefore, per Rule 1, Choose A.

(A) "slight long-term savings" and "substantial cost" -- Does not satisfy Rule 2
(B) "change process to preserve public image" -- We do not care about public image. (Um, we do in general, but not for this question :-) )
(D) "Process A and B are similar.. A pollute slightly more.. A is cheaper -> Choose A" -- According to Rule 1, we should choose B not A. Note that Rule 2 is not satisfied "savings > cost" not "lower cost"
(E) "cost covered by long-term savings" -- Rule 2 is not met, we need savings to be substantially greater than cost.

Random ques Chike, what do you do after you "skip" these long questions? I tend to skip match the reasoning when I am short on time, but I'm afraid I "forget" to go back to it, you know? Was wondering what you do once you skip it.. what if you don't have time to go back? Just circle any answer choice?

Currently, I don't really have a good strategy for returning to skipped questions :-(

Chances are If I skipped a long, twisty "match the reasoning" question like this one, I guessed "D" at the 34th minute.

That's really interesting. "D" is what I always pick on Qs that I have to guess on as well! I hope we both can find a strategy before the exam!

can you ever conclude when to retool the process? I mean the reasoning is if they already have a process, you retool only if one of the 2 condition happens right? so it should be R -> L. R or greater than cost. I don't think you can ever conclude when could you retool the process. any geeks?

You are right you can't conclude when to retool since the argument gives us the necessary conditions for when retooling is used. We can only conclude from this that if a company retools, then either of the two conditions is met, or both. We also know when you shouldn't retool (when the two necessary conditions are not met). Therefore, any answer choice that tells us we should retool based on some claim is going to be wrong.

The best way to answer this question is to diagram the first conditional statement (in the first sentence) and to diagram the second part of the second conditional argument (where it tells you the necessary conditions for retooling), while specifying in your writing or keeping in mind that it applies when the company already employs a damaging process and retooling for less damaging process would involve substantial cost). So you end up with two straightforward conditionals and a reminder as to when the second conditional applies!
