The passage up until this point (lines 22-23) has been about criticism Ellison received and how he interpreted it to mean that he was supposed to censor himself for political and cultural purposes (line 20). (E) captures this--that he was expected to uphold a specific cultural agenda.

(A) is wrong because it's too broad. The passage doesn't support such a sweeping statement about arts, generally.

(B) is wrong because the passage has not been about different artists having aesthetic tastes that are different. In fact, it's been about how as an artist, Ellison was expected to conform to bigger political and cultural pressure.

(C) isolation? There hasn't been a discussion about this.

(D) is wrong because we aren't talking about audience appreciation.

Hope this helps!

I got this Q right but I felt uncertain about A.

Yeah I agree "arts" may be too broad but the passage, in lines 18-20 says "a common demand."

So, wouldn't that mean a common demand from all arts? or just in literature? That's the only thing that stumped me about A. The 2nd part of A is a little fishy though and that's probably why I didn't pick a and picked E instead.

I am interested to hear what you think.

Thanks
