Q16

by muriella Wed Nov 30, 2011 6:33 pm

Hi. I get why B is correct but am still trying to understand why answer choice A is wrong. Is it because the language - "new research overturns" is too strong or is there more fundamental error in the content of answer choice A.....Thanks in advance and thanks for this forum.

In L45 tells us that paragraph 3 is all about the implications of new research, only answer choice that describes "implication" is choice (B). And also it highlights the findings in L4-50.

The reason why answer choice (A) is incorrect because misstates the classical asssumptiothat the new research challenges. It's not a parasitism vs. symbiosis issue, we are focusing in allegedly inevitable evolution from the latter to the former.

Hope it helps!

Great explanation:

In case someone wants to know about the other answers:

(C) is too extreme. While the findings do have a bearing on a broader issue in evolutionary science, we have no evidence that this sort of use is the "fundamental purpose" of classifying fungus. (We all know the fundamental purpose is to figure out which mushrooms you can eat.)

(D) is contradicted - the findings don't verify the assumption, they call it into question!

(E) is out of scope - there's no explaining of the evolution.
