Q16

by OliviaB660 Fri Nov 06, 2020 4:03 pm

I am baffled by this question. I see that the right answer is B, but I can't figure out why it doesn't work. I think I must be missing something pretty obvious.

When I tried M & F together on Team 2, I ended up with --->

Team 1: S, R, J
Team 2, O, M, F
Out: N

Why doesn't this work?

Happy to help. Your diagram ALMOST works, except J can't be in group 1. If M is in group 2, then according to the third rule R and S can't be in group 2.

The contrapositive of the fourth rule is - R2 --> - J1. So if R is not in group 2, J can't be in group 1. And if J can't be in group 1, there's no anthropologist for that group (since F and M are in group 2), and it doesn't work.

Always write out the contrapositives of conditional rules. It just takes a few seconds, and will always be useful.
