Q15

Is B wrong because "ridicule" is too strong and lines 11-15 never specify that those holding traditional views are upper class?

Question Type:
Infer Information

Answer expected in lines/paragraph:
Although the stem points us to 39-40, there was another reference to this rhetoric in line 6-7, and a description of it takes up the rest of the paragraph.

Any prephrase?
The rhetoric is expressed as "authentic science depended upon actual experiments performed, observed, and recorded by the scientists themselves".

Correct answer:
D

Answer choice analysis:

A) Maybe, but this isn't a great match for lines 7-10, and it seems to be the "Local Trap" of just using words nearby to the advertised line reference.

B) This is the opposite of what we're looking for … the rhetoric said it was GOOD, if not mandatory, for upper class scientists to do their own work. It "commends a hands-on approach".

C) Nowhere close to our line reference.

D) This locks in with 7-10 nicely.

E) Nowhere close to our line reference

Takeaway/Pattern: When a question stem gives you line numbers, don't assume that the Proof Text is actually found in or around that line number. If the question stem refers to a concept mentioned multiple times in the passage, you need to investigate all references. In this case, we needed to answer the question "What WAS the 17th century rhetoric?" It got defined in lines 7-10, so that Proof Text became our prephrase.
