Where do you see the term "variation?"
Here's how I see it... We're looking for something compatible with the biochemists' views. Let's turn to the paragraph where the biochemists' views are discussed. In the second paragraph the author says that the biochemists were more interested "in the more 'fundamental' issues of the chemical nature of protoplasm, especially the newly formulated enzyme theory of life."
This sounds a lot like answer choice (B).
As for answer choice (C), I never saw "behavioral patterns" discussed in the passage. So it's tough to make the case that the answer choice is most compatible with the views of the biochemists.
