Q14

by eric.zeleznik Fri Sep 16, 2011 2:13 pm

Confused as to why (A) Shigeru is the answer.

If Oliver always plays tennis as it says in the conditions of the game, How Can Kim ever be the lowest ranking tennis player?

Another condition in the game states If Paulo Plays Tennis then Kim Plays tennis - Oliver ranking LOWER than Kim but higher than Paulo.

So if Kim ever played tennis, she'd always be higher than oliver...

This is a tricky question. But when you look at the conditionals, see that there are two different templates you could use with the placement of M. In both of them, it designates where S is. So when you are determining where to place S, he can be in one of two spots-- playing golf (in which case we don't care, since this question is asking about tennis) or playing tennis, outranking M. Therefore, he can never be the lowest ranking tennis player.

K is tempting because it's a free variable, but if P does not play tennis, then K is free to do whatever it wants and can be the lowest ranking tennis player.

Great answer.

Here's a scenario just to flesh that out a bit more:
Golf (low to hi): P L
Tennis (low to hi): K M S O

This makes K the lowest ranked tennis player and doesn't break any rules.

Hope this helps.
