Q14

by AngelaC568 Tue Aug 25, 2020 11:22 am

I am a tad confused on how the answer to Q14 is E. When I did my diagram and compared it to the one posted, either K or H could be in November, so what are the steps to figure out how K must be in November and not h?

Funny enough, I chose answer A and was able to use that answer to get the last few questions right.

Hi Angela!

These early Must Be True questions can be tricky, but often they are nudging us to find an inference that will help elsewhere. Fortunately for you, you found that K can go in March, and I think that helped since 16 and 17 are could be true questions, but November is the placement that absolutely must happen.

As for this one, we can work through laboriously by trying to break each answer, but the best way to get there is to realize that we need to save our precious H's. If you try out a few possible cases, you'll see that we can't go three months without an H. We need it to switch between G and K, and we can't have 3 G's or K's in a row! If we put an H in November, that leaves us with just one H for the first 5 months, and we end up breaking a rule no matter what we do. You can see it by filling H into November and trying to complete the diagram:

__ __ __ __ __  G H  K  H
Mr Ap My Jn Jy A S Oc Nv

If you fill in G in July, you've got two in a row. So before that you need an H. But that leaves you with KKG to place, and no more H to break them up!

__ __  __   H G G H  K   H
Mr Ap My Jn Jy A S Oc Nv

If you put H in July, you're in the same bind. KKGG to place and no way to break that up, either!

So now we have the global inference that K must go in November. We can add that to our chart for the rest of the game!
