Q14

by KelleyH377 Mon Sep 11, 2017 10:23 pm

Which one of the following is a complete/accurate list of the positions in which the tunnel could be placed?

In my board, I brute forced a few boards for the sake of prior work and had one board of WZVSTR. In also having boards that showed T as 6th, 4th, 2nd and 1st, I chose the answer that most emulated my boards, (E). The key is saying the correc answer is (C) 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 6th.

Can someone elaborate as to why T cannot go 5th? Thanks!

Thanks for the question, KelleyH377!

My answer key says the correct answer for this question is B. Are you certain you're looking at the right section in the key?

T can absolutely go 5th! You're not mistaken there. However, you also have in your list that you had a board where T went 4th, and that is not allowed.

If you were to put T 4th, then S would need to be 3rd, leaving you with this:

__ __ S T __ __

Since [WZ] has to go as a block in either the front or the back, that leaves R and V to take the other block - and they are not supposed to touch one another!

Same problem happens if you put T in 3rd, but all other spots for T are workable. Hence the correct answer (B) giving: first, second, fifth, sixth, as the acceptable spots!

Does that help clear things up a bit?
