Q13

by superduperchong Fri Sep 23, 2011 7:49 pm

I was stuck choosing between D and E (and ended up wrongly choosing D). What would indicate the author was "strongly supportive" as opposed to "unreservedly optimistic?"

I chose the latter because the author talks about the positive changes that might happen by incorporating the alternative narratives like in line 53 "can shatter the complacency" and line 55 "the engaging power of narrative might play a crucial, positive role." Thanks in advance!

Clearly a close call here. I'd say it's (D) because words like "can" and "might" in lines 50 and 55 (among others) are certainly supportive; they aren't as clearly optimistic. Unreserved optimism could more easily be inferred from verbs like "will"--this WILL happen! We are sure of it! (Because the author's optimism would be unreserved.) We know the author is strongly supportive about the potential of the proposals to make positive change; his/her optimism that they will happen isn't as guaranteed.
