The point of paragraph 3 is that the tiger salamander larvae use kin recognition as well, but that it appears to be used for ANOTHER function. We also don't really hear about how the mechanism itself operates, other than it is used to identify kin.
So (E) is incorrect mostly because it is claiming the opposite of what the passage claims. The passage says that kin recognition might be used by different species for different functions. Choice (E) says they are used for exact same function.
Lastly, you could probably be comfortable eliminating choice (E) based on its claim about the actual operation of the mechanism. Although the first paragraph mentions that researchers are are improving their understanding of the mechanisms, and the second paragraph briefly mentions that tadpoles 'nip', we dont really hear is about its operation in each species - only its function.
Hope this makes sense!
