The point of paragraph 3 is that the tiger salamander larvae use kin recognition as well, but that it appears to be used for ANOTHER function. We also don't really hear about how the mechanism itself operates, other than it is used to identify kin.

So (E) is incorrect mostly because it is claiming the opposite of what the passage claims. The passage says that kin recognition might be used by different species for different functions. Choice (E) says they are used for exact same function.

Lastly, you could probably be comfortable eliminating choice (E) based on its claim about the actual operation of the mechanism. Although the first paragraph mentions that researchers are are improving their understanding of the mechanisms, and the second paragraph briefly mentions that tadpoles 'nip', we dont really hear is about its operation in each species - only its function.

Hope this makes sense!

Good discussion--and agreed. The different mechanisms in the passage all come with different functions as well. Tricky one!

Where in the passage is the support for B? lines 42-47? for me all this does is prove the first half of B, that the mechanisms have become more clearly understood. Where does this say that intrest has been provoked about their purpose?

"Interestingly, a canninbal tadpole is less likely to avoid eating kin when it becomes very hungry..." I cant see how this evaluative claim on authors part can mean the same thing in the second part of answer choice B, that it has drawn intrest from others

I also had trouble on this one since I was looking for a direct answer, with different wording, since it asks what the passage STATES. I couldn't find the direct evidence, is this an inference question?

Lines 4-6 nearly restate (B).

Classic LSAC technique here. Make one of the last three questions for a passage a recall question that draws from the earliest part of the passage. Something to look out for, always.

I got this one wrong on the first try but I read it again and picked B without a doubt the passage itself reflects this answer why else are they going into detail about it
