Re: pt 58 S1 Q13 It can be inferred from the passage..

This is an interesting question.

Remember that it's an inference question, and stick close to the text. You'll have to find support for you answer in the part of the passage regarding oil field flows: the second paragraph, and perhaps the end of the first.

(B) is wrong because there is no evidence in the passage to suggest that parallel systems had not been considered. In fact, we have evidence that Emeagwali designed parallel systems throughout the 1980s (lines 6-8).

(E) is correct because of lines 32-35. This is classic LSAT -- the inference is no more than a re-wording of something written directly on the page, which paradoxically can make it difficult to see! The passage says that one of the difficulties is to set the computers up so that they don't interfere with each other. What can we infer? That it's possible for the computers to interfere with each other.

The "before 1989" is ultimately nothing more than smoke and mirrors, designed to keep us from looking in the correct part of the passage for the answer. Since the text states simply "One of the difficulties with parallel computing is...." We can reasonably infer that, since Emeagwali solved this problem in 1989, it was in fact a problem before 1989.
I host free online workshop/Q&A sessions called Zen and the Art of LSAT. You can find upcoming dates here: http://www.manhattanlsat.com/zen-and-the-art.cfm

I actually think 1989 is a crucial term that we needed to pay attention to in this question, I didn't and I think thats why i missed it. Had it said prior to 1980s, I think it's reasonable to infer that using the network of computers hadn't been considered since it was this guy who had a breakthrough in this kind of system, although it could been it was considered by him or others before, but no one couldn't do it beforehand, but this became an extremely attractive answer. But since it said 1989, we know this has definitely been considered, at least by this guy. So we can definitely rule it out. I was stuck between B and E, had I read more closely on this question, I would have gotten it right. :(
